Pediatric gapogram for esophageal atresia

  • Patient preparation: none
  • Contrast used: none
  • Technique: pediatric surgery inserts a Bougie dilator into the proximal esophageal pouch via the mouth and another Bougie dilator into the distal esophageal pouch via the gastrostomy tube tract
  • Images to obtain: AP image of the chest with maximum tension being exerted upon the proximal and distal Bougie dilators
  • Looking for: measurement of the gap between the proximal and distal esophageal segments in esophageal atresia patients who could not undergo an immediate esophageal atresia repair
  • Post procedure tasks: pediatric surgery replaces gastrostomy tube
