Pediatric colostogram

  • Patient preparation: none
  • Contrast used: high osmolar water soluble
  • Technique: cannulate distal limb of ostomy / mucous fistula using small Foley catheter, gently partially inflate Foley balloon within bowel to provide a tight seal, inject contrast to fully distend caliber of colon from mucous fistula to rectum
  • Images to obtain: AP abdomen, lateral rectum
  • Looking for: strictures in colon, recto-vesico fistula in patient with anorectal malformation – if you are not demonstrating the fistula in a patient with anorectal malformation you do not have a good enough seal
