Differential diagnosis of Chiari malformations

Approach to the differential diagnosis of Chiari malformations:

  • Chiari I malformation has low lying cerebellar tonsils
  • Chiari II malformation has small posterior fossa, low lying cerebellar tonsils, kinking of the cervical spinal cord and a lumbar myelomeningocele
  • Chiari III malformation has small posterior fossa, low lying cerebellar tonsils, kinking of the cervical spinal cord and an occipital encephalocele
