Pediatric Human Immunodeficiency Virus Encephalitis

  • Etiology: Human immunodeficiency virus
  • Imaging:
    — Global atrophy
    — Ventriculomegaly
    — Symmetrical basal ganglia calcification (30%)
  • Imaging MRI:
    — T2WI: White matter atrophy with hyperintense foci (90%)
  • DDX:
  • Complications: Most common superinfection is cytomegalovirus, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy rare in children
  • Treatment:
  • Clinical:
    — At least 50% of HIV infected children develop neurologic disease
    — Present with acute encephalopathy
    — Global decline and loss of milestones and skills
