Ileal Duplication and Jejunal Duplication

  • Etiology: Abnormal budding of gastrointestinal tract lined with gastrointestinal epithelium which may communicate with enteric lumen proper
  • Imaging US: Cystic lesion with echogenic rim sign = enteric signature (gut signature) = hyperechoic inner layer of cyst representing bowel mucosa
  • Imaging Tc-pertechnetate scan: May contain gastric mucosa so may be visible
  • DDX: Ovarian cyst, mesenteric cyst, omental cyst
  • Complications:
    — Bleeding
    — May serve as pathologic lead point and cause obstruction, intussusception, small bowel volvulus
  • Treatment: Elective surgical removal
  • Clinical: Ileum is commonest location of enteric duplication

Radiology Cases of Ileal Duplication

US of ileal duplication cyst
Transverse (above) and sagittal (below) US of the abdomen shows a cystic abdominal mass with an echogenic central rim.

Surgery Cases of Ileal Duplication

Surgical image of ileal duplication
Surgical images show the round mass arising from the mesenteric border of the ileum.
Surgical image of ileal duplication
Surgical laparoscopic images show a large hypervascularized lesion in the center of both images that is in close proximity with / adherent to the normal appearing small intestine around it.
