Meconium

  • Etiology: Sterile bowel contents of fetus which are expelled in first stool, composed of materials ingested in utero: intestinal epithelial cells, lanugo, mucous, amniotic fluid, bile, water
  • Imaging:

  • Complications: Meconium aspiration syndrome, meconium plug syndrome, meconium obstruction of prematurity, uncomplicated meconium ileus, complicated meconium ileus, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome
  • Treatment:
  • Clinical: Visually is viscous, sticky, tar-like, dark in color
