Omphalocele

  • Etiology: Anterior abdominal wall defect where umbilicus inserts at apex of hernia sac
  • Imaging AXR: Multiple loops of bowel outside of abdominal cavity within an encasing sac
  • DDX:
  • Complications:
  • Treatment: Reduced via silo
  • Clinical: Associated gastrointestinal and genitourinary and cardiovascular congenital anomalies

Radiology Cases of Omphalocele

AXR of omphalocele
Lateral AXR shows multiple loops of bowel encased within a sac outside of the abdomen. The abdominal cavity is small.
CXR of omphalocele
CXR AP shows a large round sac-like object projecting over and beyond (and therefore outside of) the right side of the abdomen which contains multiple loops of bowel. The stomach is in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen.
AXR of PICC line tip in spinal canal
AXR lateral (left) shows the tip of a right lower extremity PICC line looping back upon itself and projecting over the spinal canal. AXR AP (right) after reposition of the line shows the tip projecting over the inferior vena cava. The patient also has a large anterior abdominal wall defect containing loops of bowel which is covered by a membranous sac.
AXR of cloacal exstrophy
AXR shows diastasis of the symphysis pubis, multiple loops of bowel outside the contour of the abdomen inferiorly, and multiple segmentation anomalies in the lower lumbar spine and sacrum.
