Pediatric Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma

  • Etiology: Neoplasm
  • Imaging:
    — Temporal lobe most common,
    — Large peripheral cystic mass in ventricular side
    — Enhancing mural nodule with calcification abuts meninges
    — Minimal mass effect or edema
  • DDX:
  • Complications: 30% undergo malignant transformation
  • Treatment:
  • Clinical: Slow growing

CT without contrast of the brain shows a large heterogenous mass in the anterior right hemisphere that has faint linear calcifications, a marked amount of surrounding edema, and mass effect to the left.
