Pediatric Pneumocystis Jiroveci Pneumonia

  • Etiology: Organism is a yeast-like fungus that affects immunocompromised host such as HIV or malignancy
  • Imaging CXR: Can look like anything on CXR
  • Imaging CT:
    — Diffuse ground glass opacity and interlobular septal thickening
    — May have cystic spaces and bullae
    — Pleural effusion rare

CXR of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia / PCP / PJP
CXR AP shows bilaterally diffuse, symmetrical, fine reticular infiltrates.
CT of pediatric pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia
Axial CT with contrast of the chest shows diffuse ground glass opacities throughout the lungs and interlobular septal thickening. Very small lung nodules are also seen.
