Sever Disease

  • Etiology:
    — Achilles traction on calcaneal apophysis
    — Overuse injury of heal made worse by sports especially those involving running or jumping
  • Imaging Radiograph: Not diagnostic
  • Imaging MRI:
    — Edema in calcaneal apophysis (a metaphyseal equivalent) and surrounding soft tissues
    — Tendon thickening

  • Treatment:
  • Clinical: 9-11 years old

Lateral radiographs of the left foot (above) and right foot (below) show dense calcaneal apophyses bilaterally which have been present on radiographs over the last 4 years. The calcaneal apophyses bilaterally are now nearly completely fused.
