Ultrasound of the pediatric thyroid

  • Patient preparation: none
  • Contrast used: none
  • Technique: scan entire thyroid gland and the surrounding neck looking for lymphadenopathy
  • Images to obtain: transverse and sagittal grayscale images of both lobes of the thyroid and the thyroid isthmus and any abnormal lymph nodes seen, color doppler images of any abnormalities noted
  • Looking for: thyroid nodules, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease
