Differential diagnosis of pediatric hernias

Approach to the differential diagnosis of hernias:

  • An umbilical hernia presents as an umbilical mass and can be confirmed with ultrasound or AXR
  • An abdominal wall hernia presents as an abdominal wall mass and can be confirmed with ultrasound
  • An inguinal hernia presents as an inguinal or scrotal mass and can be confirmed with ultrasound
  • An incarcerated hernia is a clinical diagnosis and not a radiologic diagnosis
