Differential diagnosis of malformations of cortical migration

Approach to the differential diagnosis of malformations of cortical migration:

  • Heterotopia – abnormal placement of gray matter between the ventricular system and brain cortex
  • Lissencephaly – diffusely decreased gyration and sulcation of the brain leaving it with a diffusely smoother than normal appearance
  • Polymicrogyria – focal areas of small haphazard appearing gyri with too few sulci
  • Schizencephaly – gray matter cleft extending from the cortex to the ventricle
